Boxing day Started fine. We had to leave our lovely hotel by 12, and decide to hang out in Cochin until the evening. Steve and I leave Julia nursing her hangover in a resturant whilst we shop for a few things and wonder around in the extremley hot sun aimlessly. After and hour we meet Julia and head down to the Sunset point in order to get some fish. However on arrival we find that the resturant has been washed away and all our friends are standing around looking pretty sad. Niyas tells us not to go to Sri lanka, but we do not realise why he is telling us not to go. We think that there has just been a freak tide as this can happen often. We should be heading to Kanyukumari this evening, it is right on the tip of India and supposed to be very beautiful. Strangely though, Julia has a hangover, Sian is not feeling too great and Steve cant be arsed to leave Cochin so we decide to stay for a few days before flying to Sri Lanka on the 28th. We check in to Vasco Homestay, it is really nice to stay in someones house and the owners and their children seem really friendly. They have a TV tuned in to BBC World News.
It is only now that we realise why we shouldn't go to Sri Lanka or Kanyakumari. The three of us stand and watch the devestation caused by the earthquake and Tsunami on the TV. We realise why our favourite resturant has been washed away, and Julia remembers why everyone suddenly moved from the front of the resturant whilst she was nursing her hangover. Steve's Mum texts us to check if we are ok, and we realise that we should all phone home to stop our families from worrying about us.
After about 30 minutes of watching the terrible news we are getting worried about our friend Stephano who is staying in Sri Lanka. We try to call him but cannot get through. Neither of our phones will text him either. We send him an email in the hope he will respond. We are very worried about him as he was, like everyone, heading for the coast.
It is a very sombre night for all of us. I think everyone at home is better informed about the whole disaster than we are, finding things out for sure is quite tricky.
