Moon Set Party and funny roads.....(Steve)

At the end of the last enrty Sian wrote that we would hire a bike on the 3rd and go off round the island. What we hadnt thought of was the Moon Set Party that night at the Pirates Bar. In the bizarre little cove at the end of the beech there was an all night party, whilst it took a while to get going it was really good fun and Ewan and Luke (two guys from the same little beech huts) were also enjoying themselves.

It had the mix you would expect of Thai locals and tourists, the usual white guys with Thai girls and a couple of suspect looking people of undeterminable gender. The Swedish DJ was playing some cool trance, not my usual choice of sounds but it worked ok. Sian was attempting to support the Rum industry and when the night ended at 6am it was all too obvious that a little too much had been consumed!!

Therefore the 4th February was a very quiet day in our little word and the bike never got hired, which was a good thing because as we discovered the next day when we'd recovered, the roads here arent exactly normal. Ko Pha-Ngan is very hilly, but instead of trying to cut through the hills a bit they have, basically, slapped concreate on whatever was there. Meaning two things, the first being that on numerous sections of road it is in fact falling down the hills, literally. Making it a bit dangerous as you round a corner and find a truck coming towards you and a gaping hole on your side of the road!! Wakes you up I can tell you. The second thing is that the steepness of the hills makes a bike with two people on it really struggle, the worst sections are on the way to Hat Rin, the venue for the full moon party, where overloaded pick up etc struggle as well, safety, a wonderful thing. It isnt even concreated properly, making me wonder just how many accidents occur at the time of the full moon, one to be carefull of when we return for that.

We wanted to find the good snorkling points at the North of the island but ended up enjoying our cruise around the island, the snorkling could wait till tomorrow. Despite getting in a few hairy off-road situations (Sian getting off for one particularly badly rutted hill, only to fall over anyway in the dust and dirt!) we had a good day, feeling less hungover.

On the 5th we eventually found the snorkling at Ko Mah. Sadly, despite the best snorkling gear I've ever had, the visibility was awful and we lasted only an hour before the biting of the sea lice, combined with seeing nothing had us heading back. Think we'll do our diving on Ko Chang in the Nothern Gulf.

We head back and continue our enjoyment of our two hammocks, and then spend our last night here watching Harrp Potter and the prisoner of thingy, nice.
